The Nashville Predators will not qualify RFA defenseman Michael Del Zotto, allowing the 24-year-old to hit free agency as a UFA tomorrow.
Del Zotto was acquired by Nashville from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Kevin Klein. He struggled during his time in Nashville only scoring a goal and five points in 25 games.
Despite his recent struggles, Del Zotto should still garner a lot of interest from teams looking to add a young offensive defenseman.
Talks between RFA Ryan Johansen and the Columbus Blue Jackets are not progressing well. Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch tweeted:
Johansen is an important piece of the Jackets core and they would be wise to sign him to whatever term he wants, but the team is playing hardball and is looking to sign a bridge deal, something that Johansen is not interested in.
Will Johansen sign an offer-sheet in an attempt to secure the length that he is looking for? I would think that this would be the most likely option.
According to Darren Dreger:
Martin Brodeur would prove to be a valuable mentor for Jonathan Bernier, but in the past, he has clashed with young goalies, as he still wants to play in a starting role.
If Brodeur is willing to play as a backup goalie, he would be a fantastic piece for the Toronto Maple Leafs, otherwise, they will likely pass on him as they are not interested in potential goalie drama and extra baggage.
As per Pierre LeBrun:
Thomas Vanek still has interest in the Minnesota Wild, but he is also considering how much more he could make if he waits until the offers roll in on July 1st.
The Montreal Canadiens have acquired forward P.A. Parenteau and a 5th round pick in 2015 from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Daniel Briere.
Parenteau, 31, was long rumored to have been on the trading block. Despite a knee injury and persistent trade rumors, Parenteau managed to put up decent numbers scoring 14 goals and 33 points in 55 games.
Briere, 36, just finished the first of a two-year, $8 million deal that carries a $4M annual cap hit. Last season in Montreal was a disappointment as he was a healthy scratch on occasion and only posted 13 goals and 25 points in 69 regular season games.
Bob McKenzie reports:
Gorges, 29, has four more seasons at a cap-hit of $3.9 million left on his contract.
The UFA defenseman market is adding some depth the day before free agency kicks off, as Anton Volchenkov, Tim Gleason and Shane O’Brien were bought-out of their contracts by their teams.
Jamie McBain was not qualified by Buffalo, making him a UFA tomorrow at noon.
Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman continues to clear cap space:
The move frees up an additional $1.6M in cap space. Yzerman now has plenty of space to work with when free agency opens on Tuesday.
