Stars Sign Klingberg to Extension

The Dallas Stars have signed defenseman John Klingberg to a seven year, $29.75 million ($4.25 million AAV) contract extension.

Klingberg, 22, had a remarkable freshman campaign, leading all rookie defenseman with 40 points, which included 11 goals, in only 65 games played.

Klingberg was secheduled to become a restricted free agent this off-season.

Insider Trading: Vermette, Blackhawks, Capitals, Leafs, Bruins, Petry

Bob McKenzie says the Blackhawks definitely want to use the money available from placing Patrick Kane on LTIR on a player with to term on his contract beyond this season. He says, at this point, the Hawks are the most interested team in making a deal before the deadline, and that Antoine Vermette is the player most in demand throughout the league. The Blackhawks are seriously interested in Vermette, but also Curtis Glencross and Cam Atkinson.

Pierre Lebrun reports that Capitals are interested in Erik Cole, Curtis Glencross and Joffrey Lupul.

Darren Dreger says there’s no guarantee that any of Joffrey Lupul, Dion Phaneuf or Tyler Bozak are traded before the deadline, there is “a lot of interest and activity” surrounding the trio.

Pierre Lebrun says the Boston Bruins have been looking for a winger for over a month. They’ve been in on Chris Stewart for a while now. They are also interested in Erik Cole, Cam Atkinson and Curtis Glencross.

Darren Dreger says a Jeff Petry trade talks haven’t produced a satisfactory offer as of yet, and re-signing is unlikely at this point, so GM Craig MacTavish continues to wait.

Bruins Likely Interested in Erik Cole

Pierre Lebrun reports that Erik Cole is a name on the Bruins’ shopping list should the Dallas Stars decide to sell.

Cole, 36, has 18 goals and 14 assists in 56 games with the Stars in 2013-14.

Lebrun says the Bruins are also interested in Chris Stewart and Cam Atkinson, but the prices remain high for their liking.

Stars Acquire Jhonas Enroth

The Stars have acquired Jhonas Enroth from the Sabres for Anders Lindback and a conditional third round pick.

Pierre Lebrun reports the conditional 3rd is for the 2016 draft, and that the pick will become a 2nd if Enroth wins 4 playoff games for the Stars.

Report: Stars Interested in Joffrey Lupul

Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Sun reports on trade chatter surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Amongst the chatter, the Dallas Stars are interested in Joffrey Lupul. Lupul, 31, is signed through 2017-18 at a cap hit of $5.25 million. Also, unidentified teams are interested in Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel.

Zwolinski also reports that Ryan O’Reilly would be available for Nazem Kadri and one of Cody Franson or Jake Gardiner, though Arizona is said to have offered Keith Yandle for the Avs’ centerman.

Fourth Period: Yandle Will Be Costly

Although many believe Coyotes’ defenseman Keith Yandle will be moved sometime this season, The Fourth Period suggests it won’t be cheap. The report suggests the Yotes would move Yandle for a package including “a young, NHL-proven top-six forward, a prospect and a high draft pick”.

It is noted that the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings have all made inquiries on Yandle over the past year.

Yandle has one more season left on his contract with a cap hit of $5.25 million.

Stars Sign Spezza to Four-Year Extension

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports the Stars have signed Jason Spezza to a $30 million / 4 year contract extension [$7.5M per].

In 20 games with the Stars this season, Spezza has 4 goals and 14 assists. He will be 36 when this new four-year pact expires.

Spezza was traded to the Stars from the Senators July 1, 2014 in exchange for Alex Chiasson, Nick Paul, Alex Guptill and a 2015 second round pick.

Canadiens Acquire Gonchar for Moen

Pierre Lebrun reports the Canadiens have acquired Sergei Gonchar from the Stars in exchange for Travis Moen.

The Stars will retain 8% of Gonchar’s salary.

Sergei Gonchar’s contract will expire after this season. His cap-hit is $5 million. Travis Moen is signed through next season as well with a cap hit of $1.85 million.
