Pierre LeBrun reports in his column for the Athletic that a couple of sources have floated the idea of Colorado renting Seth Jones for a Cup run in 2021-22 before letting him walk as a free agent.
Colorado has been hesitant to add long-term commitments as their young core is gradually going to need new contracts and raises.
The Avalanche have taken a slow approach to building a winner and haven’t been eager to make big additions to supplement their core, but a few seasons of not getting past the second round might be changing their mind on that approach. Columbus’ biggest need is at center and you would have to think Alex Newhook would be their primary target from the Avalanche.
LeBrun concedes that Philadelphia and Chicago “probably make more sense” for Jones.
