  • Panthers acquire Vitek Vanecek

    The Florida Panthers have acquired Vitek Vanecek from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Patrick Giles.

    The Sharks are not retaining any of Vanecek’s $3.4 million cap hit. The Panthers can fit that in as they are placing Matthew Tkachuk on LTIR.

    Vanecek, 34, is 3-10-3 with an 0.882 SV% with the Sharks this season. Patrick Giles is a 25-year old who has played 9 games with the Panthers this season.

    Presumably, the Sharks will call up Yaroslav Askarov to fill the hole left by Vanecek.

  • Canadiens re-sign Jake Evans

    The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed Jake Evans to a 4-year contract extension with a cap hit of $2.85 million.

    Evans, 28, has 12 goals and 16 assists in 61 games for the Canadiens this season.

    With Evans off the market, it figures to increase the competition for other potential center options on the trade market such as Scott Laughton, Yanni Gourde and Nick Bjugstad.

  • Oilers acquire Trent Frederic

    The Edmonton Oilers have acquired Trent Frederic from the Edmonton Oilers along with Max Jones in exchange for a 2nd round pick in 2025, a 4th round pick in 2026 and Maximum Wanner.

    The Bruins are retaining 50% of Frederic’s contract, and the New Jersey Devils are also retaining 25% in exchange for Shane LaChance, Edmonton’s 6th round pick in 2021.

    Chris Johnston reports that there’s currently “no indication” that Frederic will be healthy enough to play before the playoffs, so his first game in an Oilers’ sweater might be a playoff matchup.

  • Utah re-signs Olli Maatta

    The Utah Hockey Club has re-signed Olli Maatta to a 3-year contract extension with a cap hit of $3.5 million per season.

    Maatta was acquired from Detroit in October in a trade that sent a 2025 3rd round pick to the Red Wings.

    Maatta, 30, has 2 goals and 12 assists in 51 games for Utah since being acquired.

  • Avalanche acquire Ryan Lindgren

    The Colorado Avalanche have acquired Ryan Lindgren, Jimmy Vesey and prospect Hank Kempf from the New York Rangers in exchange for Juuso Parssinen, Calvin de Haan, a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick.

    The Rangers are retaining 50% of Lindgren’s $4.5 million cap hit.

    The 2nd round pick the Rangers will be receiving will be the better of their own 2nd and the Hurricanes’ 2nd.

    This seems to be the signal that the Rangers will be going about a soft retool this season. Another pending UFA in Reilly Smith might be an upcoming move for them.

  • Wild discussing acquiring Gustav Nyquist

    Gustav Nyquist is being held out of the Nashville Predators’ lineup today, apparently because they are discussing a Gustav Nyquist trade with the Minnesota Wild.

    After putting up 75 points for the Predators last season, Nyquist’s production has slipped this season, with 9 goals and 12 assists in 57 games.

    He is set to be a UFA after this season.

    Nyquist previously played briefly with the Wild in 2022-23, with 5 points in 3 regular season games and 4 points in 6 playoff games. He figures to get an opportunity with the Wild, who have forwards Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson-Ek out with injuries.

  • Report: Hall, Canes working towards extension

    Andy Strickland reports that the Carolina Hurricanes and Taylor Hall are moving towards a contract extension, though none is imminent.

    The Hurricanes acquired Hall in a 3-team trade with the Avalanche and Blackhawks that also saw them bring in Mikko Rantanen.

    Hall has only 1 assist in 8 games since being acquired by the Hurricanes.

  • Saturday Headlines: Rantanen, Schenns, Jones

    On tonight’s Saturday Headlines, Elliotte Friedman touched on some trade talk around the league.

    • The Carolina Hurricanes met with Mikko Rantanen’s representatives face-to-face over the Four Nations Faceoff and the Hurricanes made an offer believed to be worth more than $100 million over the life of the contract. Rantanen hasn’t said no, but still needs to process the offer and everything that’s happened since his surprising trade to Carolina. Teams are waiting to see if the winger hits the trade market, but it might be possible that the Canes hold on to him if they are confident they can re-sign him, even if his signature isn’t on a contract prior to the trade deadline.
    • Some teams talking about acquiring both Brayden and Luke Schenn from St. Louis and Nashville respectively. Brayden has said he hasn’t been approached about a trade as of yet.
    • Seth Jones has asked for a trade to a contender, though not many contenders have much space to take on his $9.5 million cap hit.
