• Canucks re-sign Drew O’Connor

The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed Drew O’Connor to a 2-year contract extension worth $2.5 million per season.

O’Connor, 26, has 2 goals in 4 games since coming over from Pittsburgh in a trade that brought he and Marcus Pettersson to Vancouver.

The Canucks previously signed Pettersson to a 6-year contract.

  • Stars re-sign Sam Steel

The Dallas Stars have re-signed Sam Steel to a 2-year contract extension worth $2.1 million per season.

Steel, 27, has 4 goals and 13 assists in 53 games for the Stars this season. He was eligible to be a UFA this summer.

Steel originally signed with the Stars as a UFA in the summer of 2023 after the Wild declined to give him a qualifying offer.

  • Predators acquire Mark Friedman

The Nashville Predators have acquired Mark Friedman from the Vancouver Canucks for future considerations.

Friedman, 29, has split time between the Canucks and their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford this season. The Canucks acquired defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Victor Mancini within the past week, apparently making the depth defenseman expendable.

  • Canucks re-sign Marcus Pettersson

The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed Marcus Pettersson to a 6-year contract extension with a cap hit of $5.5 million.

The contract carries a full no-movement clause in the first 3 seasons, and a 15-team no-trade clause in the last 3 seasons.

The Canucks acquired Pettersson last week from Pittsburgh, which saw them trade the Rangers 1st round pick, acquired earlier that day in the J.T. Miller trade.

Pettersson, 28, has only played 2 games with the Canucks since the trade. He had 3 goals and 15 assists in 47 games with the Penguins this season. His 86 blocked shots rank 48th in the league.

  • Stars acquire Granlund, Ceci

The Dallas Stars have acquired Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 1st round pick and a conditional 4th round pick.

Granlund and Ceci are both eligible to be unrestricted free agents after this season.

Granlund, who turns 33 this month, has been a prominent offensive producer for the Sharks. He’s registered 27 goals and 78 assists in 121 games since being acquired by the club as a cap dump in the Erik Karlsson trade.

Ceci, 31, has also acquired from a cap-strapped team, as the Oilers traded him to the Sharks in August along with a 3rd round pick for Ty Emberson.

  • Canucks acquire Marcus Pettersson

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired Marcus Petterson and Drew O’Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins for Vincent Desharnais, Danton Heinen, Melvin Fernstrom and the Rangers’ 2025 1st round pick.

A big, physical defenseman, Pettersson was one of the most coveted blueliners on the trade market. In 47 games with the Penguins this season, Pettersson had 3 goals and 15 assists.

The pick the Canucks are sending to Pittsburgh, they acquired earlier today in the J.T. Miller trade. The pick is top-13 protected.

  • Rangers acquire J.T. Miller

The New York Rangers have acquired J.T. Miller from the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks receive in return Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini and a top-13 protected 2025 1st round pick. The Rangers also receive Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington.

This trade has been much rumored, with it reportedly almost coming to fruition earlier this month.

Miller brings a unique blend of size and skill to the Rangers, but the Canucks felt they had to move him because of a clash with Elias Pettersson. Miller previously clashed with Bo Horvat before the Canucks moved him to the Islanders. He had 152 goals and 285 assists in 404 games with the Canucks over 6 seasons. Miller is signed through 2027-28 at a cap hit of $8 million.

Filip Chytil is the main piece going back to the Canucks. The 24-year old center has 11 goals and 9 assists in 41 games this season. He figures to get more of an opportunity in Vancouver, with a clear lane to 2nd line minutes. Injuries are a concern with Chytil, as he missed most of last season with a concussion. He carries a $4.44 million cap hit through 2026-27, saving the Canucks $3.56 million in cap space.

Victor Mancini is a big, mobile defense prospect, who could contribute to the NHL soon. He played 15 games for the Rangers this season, putting up 1 goal and 4 assists.

If the Rangers’ 2025 1st round pick falls in the top-13, the Canucks will receive their 2026 1st round pick.

  • Islanders claim Adam Boqvist

The New York Islanders have claimed defenseman Adam Boqvist off waivers from the Florida Panthers.

Boqvist signed with the Panthers last summer after being bought out by the Columbus Blue Jackets. His brother Jesper also signed with the Panthers after not being qualified by the Bruins.

Adam Boqvist had 2 goals and 4 assists in 18 games with the Panthers this season.
