• Are the Hurricanes in for a Lot of Turnover?

On 31 Thoughts: The Podcast (29:20) Elliotte Friedman says he think Carolina is an interesting team to watch right now. He mentions that Jordan Martinook’s father posted to Facebook that Jordan is done in Carolina, that there’s talk that Warren Foegele is done with the team and that Dougie Hamilton is exploring his options in advance of free agency.

Friedman notes that Carolina will set the price they’re comfortable with and if the players don’t feel the same about their number, the team is comfortable moving on. He thinks Andrei Svechnikov is an exception there, and the team will do what it takes to get him under contract long-term.

  • Coyotes and Conor Garland Look to Be Moving Apart

Frank Seravalli put Conor Garland at #4 on his trade board, suggesting he’s a prime candidate to be traded before the 2021-22 season starts.

Garland’s representations tells Seravalli that’s there’s been no dialogue on a new contract since May 20. Garland will be a RFA this summer.

Elliotte Friedman reported that the Leafs were heavily involved in trade talks for Garland before they finalized the pre-deadline trade for Nick Foligno.

It should be an interesting summer for the Coyotes, as they will apparently try to cut salary. Friedman reported earlier that he believes Phil Kessel and Oliver Ekman-Larsson will be traded, and that Garland and Darcy Kuemper are up in the air.

  • Flyers Are in on Seth Jones

Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic reports that the Flyers are one of the teams interested in Columbus defenseman Seth Jones.

While it seemed like an obvious fit, as the Flyers have desperately needed a defenseman to play matchup minutes on the right of Ivan Provorov since Matt Niskanen’s shock retirement, LeBrun now confirmed that the Flyers are in on the bidding.

As well as the obvious need, LeBrun notes that the Flyers have plenty of young players in their 20s that the Blue Jackets might covet. Joel Farabee, Travis Konecny and Morgan Frost could be among the group players which LeBrun is referring to.

The Flyers won’t be the only team interested in Jones, however. LeBrun reports the interest for the defenseman is off the charts.

  • Boston Re-Signs Trent Frederic

The Boston Bruins have re-signed Trent Frederic to a 2-year deal.

Frederic was scratched for the entirety of the Bruins’ 2021 playoff run. He will look to carve out a bigger role with the Bruins in 2021-22.

  • What Might a Eichel-to-Ducks Trade Look Like?

Eric Stephens, in his Q&A on The Athletic, fielded an overwhelming number of questions about the Ducks trading for Jack Eichel.

The Ducks, along with the Wild, seem to be among the consensus favorites to land Eichel, so it’s no surprise that Eichel was the focus of Ducks’ fans questions.

Like most, Stephens believes the Ducks will do what’s in their power to land Eichel without giving up young NHLers Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale. He can see the third overall pick in this July’s draft being in play, however. He also notes that the Ducks may try to unload salary in such a trade, to help alleviate some of the cap pressures Eichel’s $10 million cap hit would create. Adam Henrique, signed though 2023-24 with a $5.825 million cap hit, would fit that bill.

The chances that just the #3 pick and Henrique (who would be a concession for Buffalo) would be enough for Buffalo are near negligible. The Ducks would assuredly need to add a young NHLer (Troy Terry, Sam Steel, Isac Lundestrom?) and/or additional picks and prospects to entice the Sabres to trade Eichel their way.

  • Portzline: Eichel to Columbus Unlikely

Aaron Portzline of the Athletic reports that it doesn’t appear that the Columbus Blue Jackets are in hot pursuit of Jack Eichel.

Despite center being the Blue Jackets’ primary area of need, Portzline cites Eichel’s health and price tag, as well as the direction of the Blue Jackets as reasons it seems unlikely that the Jackets will trade for the star center.

Portzline notes, however, that the Blue Jackets have been in contact with the Sabres about Sam Reinhart. Elliotte Friedman has floated the idea of a Reinhart for Elvis Merzlikins swap on a couple occassions.

  • Kraken Name Dave Hakstol Head Coach

The Seattle Kraken have announced that Dave Hakstol will be the first head coach of the franchise.

Many considered Rick Tocchet to be the presumptive favorite for the job, but the Kraken decided to go another way. Joe Sacco, Tony Granato and David Quinn were other candidates that were reportedly in contention.

Hakstol was head coach of the Flyers from 2015-16 to 2018-19 and coached them to a 134-101-42 record. He has been an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the past two seasons. The Leafs now have an opening at assistant coach. Bruce Boudreau was heavily rumored to join Sheldon Keefe’s staff last summer, we’ll see if those rumors re-emerge.

  • Leafs Re-Sign Jason Spezza

The Leafs have re-signed Jason Spezza to a 1-year deal.

Spezza, who just turned 38, had 10 goals and 20 assists in 54 games for the Leafs this season.
