• Lamoriello: Isles Will Make Cizikas a Prioriety

According to Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello, the team will do what it can to keep pending-UFA Casey Cizikas.

The Islanders have to re-sign key UFAs Adam Pelech and Anthony Beauvillier. Pelech in particular is in line for a big raise from his $1.6 million AAV, as he’s one season away from UFA status. The Islanders might potentially shed Josh Bailey or Nick Leddy’s $5M+ cap hits if Seattle selects them, which would give them some breathing room.

If the Islanders don’t get Cizikas under contract, they might get some competition from their cross-town rivals. The Rangers have been quite public about their desire to pursue the qualities that Cizikas brings.

  • Oilers Re-Sign Nugent-Hopkins

The Oilers are about to sign pending UFA Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

The $5.125 million AAV is low in exchange for the 8-year team. Nugent-Hopkins was set to be a sought-after UFA as one of the higher profile players who can play center.

The Oilers still have a number of UFAs, including Tyson Barrie, Adam Larsson and Mike Smith.

  • Friedman: Viktor Arvidsson Being Discussed in Trade Talks

Elliotte Friedman reports that Viktor Arvidsson is a name he’s heard in trade talks.

Arvidsson, 28, has had a couple of down seasons for the Predators after scoring 61 points in back-to-back seasons followed by 48 points in 58 games in 2018-19. Last season Arvidsson put up 10 goals and 15 assists in 50 games for the Predators in 2020-21.

Arvidsson is signed for the next three seasons at a cap hit of $4.25 million–a cap hit that many cap-strapped teams will find very palatable.

Presumably, it will be another 1-year deal for the veteran forward.

  • Could Vegas Be After Jack Eichel?

Tom Callahan of Vegas Hockey Now explores how and why the Vegas Golden Knights could pursue Jack Eichel.

Callahan suggests the Knights should go after Eichel, due to their need for an impact center in their lineup.

He suggests a package of Reilly Smith, Chandler Stephenson, Cody Glass and Vegas’ 1st round pick in exchange for Eichel.

I’m not sure Buffalo would see that package as having the value to get it done. Smith is one season from UFA status. Stephenson is locked into a reasonable deal for three more seasons, but Buffalo would have to wonder how much of his success is due to playing with elite talent, which their team will likely have little of next season.

  • Are the Hurricanes in for a Lot of Turnover?

On 31 Thoughts: The Podcast (29:20) Elliotte Friedman says he think Carolina is an interesting team to watch right now. He mentions that Jordan Martinook’s father posted to Facebook that Jordan is done in Carolina, that there’s talk that Warren Foegele is done with the team and that Dougie Hamilton is exploring his options in advance of free agency.

Friedman notes that Carolina will set the price they’re comfortable with and if the players don’t feel the same about their number, the team is comfortable moving on. He thinks Andrei Svechnikov is an exception there, and the team will do what it takes to get him under contract long-term.

  • Coyotes and Conor Garland Look to Be Moving Apart

Frank Seravalli put Conor Garland at #4 on his trade board, suggesting he’s a prime candidate to be traded before the 2021-22 season starts.

Garland’s representations tells Seravalli that’s there’s been no dialogue on a new contract since May 20. Garland will be a RFA this summer.

Elliotte Friedman reported that the Leafs were heavily involved in trade talks for Garland before they finalized the pre-deadline trade for Nick Foligno.

It should be an interesting summer for the Coyotes, as they will apparently try to cut salary. Friedman reported earlier that he believes Phil Kessel and Oliver Ekman-Larsson will be traded, and that Garland and Darcy Kuemper are up in the air.

  • Flyers Are in on Seth Jones

Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic reports that the Flyers are one of the teams interested in Columbus defenseman Seth Jones.

While it seemed like an obvious fit, as the Flyers have desperately needed a defenseman to play matchup minutes on the right of Ivan Provorov since Matt Niskanen’s shock retirement, LeBrun now confirmed that the Flyers are in on the bidding.

As well as the obvious need, LeBrun notes that the Flyers have plenty of young players in their 20s that the Blue Jackets might covet. Joel Farabee, Travis Konecny and Morgan Frost could be among the group players which LeBrun is referring to.

The Flyers won’t be the only team interested in Jones, however. LeBrun reports the interest for the defenseman is off the charts.
