• Seravalli: Tarasenko, Garland, DeAngelo

Frank Seravalli discussed a few items in his new Ice Breakers feature at Daily Faceoff:

    • He reports that the Blues have been told of several teams for which star winger Vladimir Tarasenko would be willing to be dealt and that the Blues are actively exploring trade options. Tarasenko has two years remaining on his contract at a cap hit of $7.5 million.
    • He mentions that the Bruins are believed to have interest in both Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Conor Garland from the Coyotes. He suggests a big variable in trade talks is how much of Ekman-Larsson’s $8.25 million AAV contract the Coyotes are willing to eat.
    • He reports the Rangers have finalized their plans to buy-out the last season on Tony DeAngelo’s contract when the buy-out window first opens. Because of DeAngelo’s age, he will be eligible for a reduced buy-out meaning the Rangers will carry cap hits of $383,334 next season and $883,334 in 2022-23.
  • Don Granato Expected to Be Sabres Coach

Darren Dreger reports that Don Granato is expected to be announced as Sabres coach shortly.

Granato took over the Sabres bench after Ralph Krueger was fired mid-season.

This will appear to leave Rick Tocchet without a head coaching job for the start of 2020-21. Tocchet was rumored to be a candidate in New York, Seattle and Buffalo.

  • LeBrun: Tourigny Could Land Head Coaching Job in Arizona

According to Pierre LeBrun, Andre Tourigny is under serious consideration to be the head coach of the Arizona Coyotes.

There appears to be significant smoke here and I’d bet on it getting done.

Tourigny has been an assistant coach in the NHL with the Avalanche and Senators and has been a long-time head coach in the QMJHL and OHL. He was head coach of Team Canada at the 2021 World Juniors.

  • Lamoriello: Isles Will Make Cizikas a Prioriety

According to Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello, the team will do what it can to keep pending-UFA Casey Cizikas.

The Islanders have to re-sign key UFAs Adam Pelech and Anthony Beauvillier. Pelech in particular is in line for a big raise from his $1.6 million AAV, as he’s one season away from UFA status. The Islanders might potentially shed Josh Bailey or Nick Leddy’s $5M+ cap hits if Seattle selects them, which would give them some breathing room.

If the Islanders don’t get Cizikas under contract, they might get some competition from their cross-town rivals. The Rangers have been quite public about their desire to pursue the qualities that Cizikas brings.

  • Oilers Re-Sign Nugent-Hopkins

The Oilers are about to sign pending UFA Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

The $5.125 million AAV is low in exchange for the 8-year team. Nugent-Hopkins was set to be a sought-after UFA as one of the higher profile players who can play center.

The Oilers still have a number of UFAs, including Tyson Barrie, Adam Larsson and Mike Smith.

  • Friedman: Viktor Arvidsson Being Discussed in Trade Talks

Elliotte Friedman reports that Viktor Arvidsson is a name he’s heard in trade talks.

Arvidsson, 28, has had a couple of down seasons for the Predators after scoring 61 points in back-to-back seasons followed by 48 points in 58 games in 2018-19. Last season Arvidsson put up 10 goals and 15 assists in 50 games for the Predators in 2020-21.

Arvidsson is signed for the next three seasons at a cap hit of $4.25 million–a cap hit that many cap-strapped teams will find very palatable.

  • Friedman: Leafs Talking Extension with Wayne Simmonds

Elliotte Friedman reports that the Maple Leafs are working on an extension with Wayne Simmonds.

Presumably, it will be another 1-year deal for the veteran forward.

  • Could Vegas Be After Jack Eichel?

Tom Callahan of Vegas Hockey Now explores how and why the Vegas Golden Knights could pursue Jack Eichel.

Callahan suggests the Knights should go after Eichel, due to their need for an impact center in their lineup.

He suggests a package of Reilly Smith, Chandler Stephenson, Cody Glass and Vegas’ 1st round pick in exchange for Eichel.

I’m not sure Buffalo would see that package as having the value to get it done. Smith is one season from UFA status. Stephenson is locked into a reasonable deal for three more seasons, but Buffalo would have to wonder how much of his success is due to playing with elite talent, which their team will likely have little of next season.
