• Phil Kessel’s Bonus Paid Out

Phil Kessel’s bonus for 2021-22 was paid out today (or at least due to be paid), as Dave Pagnotta points out.

With that bonus out of the way, the entirety of Kessel’s financial cost for the season is his $1 million in base salary. This makes him a lot more attractive to budget conscious teams who could fit his cap hit in.

Pagnotta wonders if the Coyotes could eat half of his $1 million in salary and $6.8 million in cap hit–I imagine they would. The $500,000 cash commitment would greatly increase the number of suitors they have for Kessel, and they likely won’t spend to the cap themselves this year. Arizona will be looking to have a big summer in picking up draft picks and prospects as they might potentially trade Kessel, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Darcy Kuemper.

  • What Might a Seth Jones Trade Package Look Like?

Aaron Portzline of the Athletic speculates potential trade offers from four teams believed to be frontrunners for Seth Jones: the Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings.

The trade proposal for the Blackhawks was: Philipp Kurashev, Nicolas Beaudin, Lukas Reichel and a 2022 1st round pick.

The proposals for the other three were of a similar vein–each included a 1st round pick (the Kings’ lottery protected), but the headliner prospects and young players for each organization were left out. No Joel Farabee for the Flyers. No Quinton Byfield or Alex Turcotte for the Kings. No Bowen Byram or even Alex Newhook for the Avalanche.

Jones has one season left at a manageable $5.4 million cap hit. The interest in him will be a story to follow in the coming weeks.

  • Eichel, Sabres “Heading Towards a Resolution”

Peter Fish, the agent for Jack Eichel, believes the two sides are heading towards a resolution, John Vogl of the Athletic reports.

“We have definitely been communicating with the team and we are heading towards a resolution,” says Fish.

GM Kevyn Adams concedes that the team and the player still disagree about how to proceed with his neck injury, so it stands to reason the resolution the agent is referring to is a trade.

Minnesota, Anaheim and the Rangers are among the teams rumored to be in on Eichel trade talks.

  • Pagnotta: Nate Schmidt on Trade Block

According to Dave Pagnotta, the Canucks have made Nate Schmidt available.

The Canucks acquired Schmidt when Vegas was clearing cap space to sign Alex Pietrangelo. Schmidt had 5 goals and 10 assists in 54 games with the Canucks.

  • Could the Rangers Trade for Ryan Reaves?

On the New Ice City podcast, David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal speculates that the Rangers might ask the Golden Knights about trading for Ryan Reaves (49:00).

Schoen cites the fact that Reaves was a healthy scratch for the last two playoff games for Vegas and the fact that new Rangers’ coach Gerard Gallant was a big proponent of Reaves’ play when he was a coach of the Golden Knights.

The Rangers have been open about their desire to add a different element to their lineup, which Ryan Reaves definitely would bring, though he has lost a step from his Vegas days.

Reaves is signed for one more season at a cap hit of $1.75 million.

  • Kings Trade for Viktor Arvidsson

The Kings have traded for Viktor Arvidsson from the Predators.

It should be interesting to what the Kings gave up for Arvidsson, whose production has dipped, but is on a very reasonable contract. The Kings are deep in young centers which Nashville might covet.

UPDATE: The return is two draft picks: Los Angeles’ 2021 2nd and 2022 3rd.

  • Chicago Apparently Working on Trading Duncan Keith

Elliotte Friedman reports that there are rumblings about Duncan Keith getting traded West.

    https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1410341882849267720

Elliotte’s geographic description would seem to include only Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Seattle. I’d venture to say that Edmonton seems to be the most likely of the group, based on cap space and team needs.

Keith, 37, has two more seasons on his contract at a cap hit of $5.538 million. He has a full no-movement clause, so he’s in total control of his next destination, if there is one.

  • Could Colorado Pursue Seth Jones?

Pierre LeBrun reports in his column for the Athletic that a couple of sources have floated the idea of Colorado renting Seth Jones for a Cup run in 2021-22 before letting him walk as a free agent.

Colorado has been hesitant to add long-term commitments as their young core is gradually going to need new contracts and raises.

The Avalanche have taken a slow approach to building a winner and haven’t been eager to make big additions to supplement their core, but a few seasons of not getting past the second round might be changing their mind on that approach. Columbus’ biggest need is at center and you would have to think Alex Newhook would be their primary target from the Avalanche.

LeBrun concedes that Philadelphia and Chicago “probably make more sense” for Jones.
