• Report: Chytil involved in Canucks trade talks

Vince Mercogliano of the Westchester Journal News reports that a league source believes that Filip Chytil has been in trade talks between the Canucks and Rangers.

Elliotte Friedman reported yesterday that the Canucks got close on trading J.T. Miller, he believes to the Rangers.

If Mika Zibanejad is unwilling to waive his no-movement clause to facilitate a trade, Filip Chytil seems like to next natural fit to be included in a trade with the Canucks, who would need a center if they were to trade Miller. The Canucks would presumably need more in addition to Chytil.

  • Oilers waive Derek Ryan

The Edmonton Oilers have placed Derek Ryan on waivers.

Ryan, 38, is in the 2nd year of a 2-year contract with a cap hit of $900,000. In 33 games this season, the center has 1 goal and 4 assists.

  • Friedman: J.T. Miller trade was close

According to Elliotte Friedman, trade talks were progressing on a trade that would send J.T. Miller out of Vancouver, but discussions hit a snag and talks are currently off. He believes the other team to be the New York Rangers.

He doesn’t disclose what the snag on the trade was, and has previously mentioned that New York is believed to be a preferred destination for Miller, so it’s unlikely that Miller would exercise his no-trade protection in such a deal. Mika Zibanejad, the main name rumored to go back to Vancouver in a Miller trade, has no-trade protection as well. One has to wonder if it isn’t Zibanejad holding up a potential deal.

Friedman further states that the Canucks have given permission for some teams to speak with Miller.

He also notes that Elias Pettersson has stated his desire to stay with the Canucks.

  • Oilers sign John Klingberg

The Edmonton Oilers have signed John Klingberg as a free agent, Darren Dreger reports.

Klingberg, 32, last played for the Leafs in 2023-24, putting up 5 assists in 14 games before his season was ended by a hip injury.

Klingberg will join an Edmonton defense corps that has Evan Bouchard, Ty Emberson and Troy Stetcher on the right side.

  • Dater: Mittelstadt could be on trade block

According to Adrian Dater, Casey Mittelstadt might be on the trade block for the Colorado Avalanche soon.

Mittelstadt, 26, has 8 goals and 18 assists in 46 games for the Avalanche this season, but has only 1 assist in his last 7 games. He’s been below 15 minutes of ice time in 3 of his last 4 games.

Mittelstadt was acquired by the Sabres last season for Bowen Byram. The center is signed for 2 more seasons at a cap hit of $5.75 million.

  • Penguins waive Tristan Jarry

The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed goaltender Tristan Jarry on waivers.

Jarry, 29, is signed through 2027-28 at a cap hit of $5.375 million. He is 8-8-4 with a 0.886 SV% this season.

Alex Nedeljkovic and Joel Blomqvist will handle the nets for the Penguins going forward.

  • Senators re-sign Ridly Greig

The Ottawa Senators have re-signed Ridly Greig to a 4-year contract extension.

Greig, 22, has 6 goals and 6 assists in 37 games for the Senators this season. Greig will have 1 RFA season remaining at the completion of this contract.

  • Friedman: Canucks turned down Zibanejad for Miller

Elliotte Friedman reports that the Vancouver Canucks turned down a trade offer from the New York Rangers involving J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad.

“You’ll remember that when Miller took his mental health break, the Rangers, who covet the player, were in Vancouver. From what I understand, they approached the Canucks to discuss what something could look like, and Zibanejad was included in the conversation. I don’t know that Zibanejad, who has a no-move clause, was ever approached. I asked at the time and did not receive a clear answer. I also think it was actually a bigger deal, and one of the issues is that Vancouver adores Braden Schneider, who the Rangers do not want to trade. This would be the second time New York has rejected a Vancouver attempt for him.”

There has been rumblings about a talks involving Miller and Zibanejad, but the timeline Friedman gives here is a bit surprising. The Rangers won in Vancouver to make a 3-game winning streak and improve their record to 12-4-1. The Rangers lost their next 2 games in Calgary and Edmonton and 2 days later news of GM Chris Drury’s memo–which said they are open for business naming Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider specifically–was reported. That means that Drury was thinking about dramatic moves earlier than when news of the memo got out.
