Travis Hamonic is joining the Canucks on a professional try-out.
The Canucks are in need of a right-shooting defenseman, with only Tyler Myers currently on the roster as an established option. The team is up against the cap but could get some breathing room by placing Micheal Ferland on long-term injury reserve.
Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello has confirmed what was largely already known: his club has signed LD Andy Greene, LW Matt Martin and G Cory Schneider.
Pierre Lebrun reports that unsigned forward Pierre-Luc Dubois may want out of Columbus, if the chatter from opposing teams is to be believed.
Not having Dubois to open the season would be a big blow to the Blue Jackets. Dubois’ 49 points last season were 7 points ahead of the next highest Blue Jackets scorer.
The St. Louis Blues have re-signed defenseman Vince Dunn to a 1-year, $1.875 million contract.
The deal is obviously less than Dunn would have liked, but as a restricted free agent without arbitration rights, his leverage is limited. The Blues are tight against the cap and have reportedly entered into an agreement to sign Mike Hoffman to a contract after his try-out is complete.
Zdeno Chara has signed with the Washington Capitals.

Chara, 43, has played the last 14 seasons with the Bruins. Even at his age, Chara was still second among Bruins’ defensemen with 21:01 in ice time per game, including a team-leading 3:11 shorthanded.
Rick Dhaliwal of TSN 1040 reports that the Canucks have checked in on UFA Sami Vatanen.
With Chis Tanev leaving in free agency, the Canucks have only Tyler Myers as a right-handed shooting defenseman, so it follows that they could be in on Vatanen. They have also been tied to Travis Hamonic.
It look like contract negotiations won’t prevent Vince Dunn from being on-time for St. Louis Blues camp, reports Andy Strickland.
Dunn became a restricted free agent without arbitration rights when free agency opened. He is four seasons away from unrestricted free agency.
