• Fourth Period: Bruins Expressed Interest in Noah Hanifin

    According to the Fourth Period, the Bruins had expressed interest in Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin during the off-season.

    Hanifin, 23, has four seasons left on his contract at a cap-hit of $4.95 million.

    The Bruins lost key left defenseman Torey Krug to St. Louis in free agency. Hanifin would address the hole he left in the lineup.

    The article mentions that Calgary is believed to have interest in Ondrej Kase, whom Boston acquired from Anaheim prior to the 2020 trade deadline. Boston would presumably have to add to Kase to get Hanifin.

  • Insider Trading: Vegas Trying to Move Pacioretty

    On TSN’s Insider Trading, Frank Seravalli says the Vegas Golden Knights have “doubled down” on their attempts to try to trade Max Pacioretty.

    Vegas is currently sitting above the league’s $81.5 million salary cap, but they could potential have some savings by putting goaltender Robin Lehner on long-term injury reserve to start the season.

    Pacioretty has 3 years left on his contract at a cap-hit of $7 million. He can list 10 teams to which he will not accept a trade.

    Seravalli suggests that moving Pacioretty could free up Vegas to sign a UFA like Mike Hoffman or Eric Haula.

  • Report: Flyers, Philippe Myers Close on New Contract

    Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Flyers and RFA defenseman Philippe Myers are close on a new contract that could be agreed to this week.

    Myers, 23, is a restricted free agent without arbitration rights. He is four seasons away from unrestricted free agency.

    In 71 NHL games, Myers has 5 goals and 13 assists for the Flyers in his career.

  • Melnyk: Senators to be Buyers this Season

    Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk spoke to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun about the present and future state of his hockey team.

    Said Melnyk: “We have turned the corner. We just now need to execute on what we have. This is the team, with what we have right now, I believe can win a Stanley Cup already, and that’s without adding some veterans, which we plan to do.”

    “We’ll be a team that’s active at the trade deadline and not as sellers, but as buyers, just like we used to be.”

    After missing out on the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, the Senators have loaded up on prospects, making three first round picks in the 2020 draft, including three of the top five picks.

  • Report: Short-term Deal Expected for Barzal

    Andrew Gross of New York Newsday reports that industry expectation is that RFA Mathew Barzal will sign a 2 or 3-year deal worth about $7 million annually.

    Gross outlines how the retirement of Johnny Boychuk probable move to the long-term injury reserve will help the Islanders fit Barzal under the cap.

    He also notes the Islanders haven’t announced contracts yet for Andy Greene, Matt Martin and Cory Schneider. It is believed the Islanders have reached agreements with the trio and are waiting for more clarity in their cap situation before announcing the contracts.

  • What Might the Devils Do With Their Cap Space?

    Corey Masisak of the Athletic speculates what the Devils might do with their cap space, which he figures to be a minimum of $10 million once the Devils have signed their RFAs.

    He calls Alex Killorn the obvious candidate for a trade, potentially bringing both leadership and scoring ability. Elliotte Friedman mentioned last week that he expects the Lightning to move Killorn in order to get under the salary cap.

    He also mentions the possibility of signing a UFA forward like Mike Hoffman, Mikael Granlund, or Anthony Duclair if any of the group would be willing to sign a short-term deal with the Devils.

  • Strickland: Preds Interested in Hoffman, Granlund

    Andy Strickland reports that the Nashville Predators are interested in UFA wingers Mike Hoffman and Mikael Granlund, with a much better chance of landing Hoffman of the two.

    Strickland notes that the Hurricanes and the Blue Jackets are two additional teams interested in Granlund.

  • Blue Jackets Might Be In Market to Acquire a Forward

    Tom Gulitti of NHL.com wonders if the Columbus Blue Jackets will target a forward to bring into their lineup with winger Gustav Nyquist out long-term with a shoulder injury.

    Gulitti mentions that for budget reasons, it might need to wait until Pierre-Luc Dubois is re-signed. He mentions Mike Hoffman and Mikael Granlund as potential targets.
